A young Arctic tern looked to the north. She didn't know why, but she always preferred the Arctic over the Antarctic. It just seemed like every inch of the Northlands spoke to her, but here, it was dead silence. Her name, Mier, meant "peace" in Slovak. Mier did not feel like it fit her. Every day was a struggle for survival. Mier always looked forward to the day the terns migrated to the north, not because it was safer, but because of the kind voices in the air. Like many Arctic terns, Mier did not know the night. She moved with the seasons and lived in constant daylight. The penguins of the south and the auks of the north often told her sto
